How We Work
Pricing and Procedures to Commission Photography

We find photography buyers appreciate knowing in advance exactly what they are
purchasing from us along with an estimate of how much it will cost. We hope this outline
of the terms and conditions under which we fulfill assignments will be useful for you.

The images Kim creates are copyrighted intellectual property and are licensed to our
clients in a similar manner that music, written materials or software is licensed. Rather
than buying the tangible piece of film or a print, our clients purchase Kim's technical
and artistic ability to create photographs that meet their needs along with a license to
use those photographs within a specified context. In order to determine a fee based
on usage of a photograph(s) we look at several factors: the number of photographs
you wish to use, the type(s) of media, the period of use, reproduction sizes, the region
of use, and exclusivity. A detailed discussion of your usage requirements is necessary
to avoid any misunderstandings later and to provide you with an accurate estimate of
what your proposed assignment will cost. These negotiated terms of sale appear on
each estimate and invoice we submit. Over the years we have reviewed many
photography business models and find this one to be most flexible and equitable.
We are able to provide photography to our clients for a range of their projects,
both large and small, while maintaining a profitable business that allows us to provide
superior and up to date service.

When editing your assignment we choose and deliver the best of every situation.
We retain the copyright to all pictures Kim produces for an assignment and require their
return in a timely manner. We grant the client the reproduction rights that have been
contracted for along with as much use of the images as required for their non-paid
public relations (this does not include use in trade publications or advertorials) and
internal communications for the period of the license. We are glad to grant additional
use of the photographs beyond the original agreement. This of course requires an
additional negotiated usage fee.

We encourage you to include us in the planning stages of your assignment. We can
advise you on the best and most efficient way to handle the photography and give an
accurate estimate of the time your assignment will take and the cost involved.

The procedures outlined above are meant as a basic reference when considering
commissioning photographs from Kauffman Photography. Each assignment has its
own specific needs and requirements that must be determined on a case by case
basis. We would welcome the opportunity to discuss the specifics of your project
with you and provide you with an estimate tailored to that project.
